Vegreville Aims to Break World Record in Honour of Pysanka’s 50th Anniversary
Vegreville, AB (July 22, 2025) – The Town of Vegreville is proud to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Vegreville Pysanka with a bold and exciting challenge: an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Egg and Spoon Race.
Set to take place on Saturday, August 30, 2025, this community-wide effort aims to bring together a hoped for 3,000 participants at Pysanka Park — surpassing the current record of 2,039 set in October 2024 in Tepatitlán de Morelos, Mexico. With eggs generously provided by the Egg Farmers of Alberta, including Burnbrae Farms and Sparks Eggs, residents, visitors, and curious competitors alike are encouraged to be part of this historic moment — all in the shadow of one of Canada’s most beloved landmarks.
“This world record attempt will be an all-hands-on-deck effort. Our goal is to bring together not just the Vegreville community, but the broader Alberta community — whether as participants, volunteers, or enthusiastic spectators. It’s only fitting that we honour the world-renowned egg and its 50th anniversary by attempting to break a world record in its name. If ever there was a time to rally around an egg-related endeavour, this is it.”

Unveiled in 1975, the Vegreville Pysanka has become an internationally recognized symbol of culture, unity, and creativity. As one of Alberta’s most visited roadside attractions, it continues to draw thousands of visitors every year to marvel at its design and heritage.
“We take great pride in showcasing the Pysanka — a powerful symbol of the Ukrainian heritage that has helped shape our vibrant community. In 2024 alone, the Visitor Information Centre recorded over 68,000 visitors exploring the grounds of Pysanka Park, with guests arriving from across the globe. This iconic landmark is more than a cultural treasure — it’s a key economic driver. From increased foot traffic for local businesses to boosted hotel stays and visitor spending, the Pysanka continues to generate real economic impact for Vegreville. It stands as both a tribute to our past and an engine for our future.”

A major event marking the Pysanka’s 50th anniversary is just around the corner. On Saturday, July 26, 2025, the Vegreville & District Chamber of Commerce — the same organization that helped bring the original vision of a giant Easter egg to life — will host a full-day community celebration at Pysanka Park. Festivities kick off at 9:00 AM with a free pancake breakfast, followed by opening ceremonies, live on-stage entertainment, a Farmers Market, Kid Zone, and interactive displays. Edmonton Oilers fans will also be treated to a special appearance by team mascot Hunter.
These two commemorative events add to what’s already been a tremendously exciting summer calendar in Vegreville — including the Canada Day Colour Run and Party in the Park, the 2025 Vegreville Pysanka Festival, and the Vegreville Medieval Faire & Artisan Market — which have collectively welcomed tens of thousands of visitors to the community so far this season.
